How your sense of smell can become your most powerful ally on your mental health journey.

We have all experienced just how powerful our sense of smell can be. During the Holidays, just smelling certain foods can bring forth a wave of emotions and nostalgia. At the same time, our sense of smell can also bring back memories that are more complicated and less cheerful.

Diesel fuel, burning rubber, electrical fires, allspice, burning trash, decomposing animals, Marlboro Reds, Pine cigarettes, Wild Tiger energy drinks and of course the taste and smell of Tyson's Chicken Jerky, are all powerful negative scents that are forever seared into my mind. Like a mental "Apple Air Tag" reminding me of exactly where I was and how bad of a situation it was at that exact moment in time.

The connection between our sense of smell and our memory can be exploited to our advantage. In the same way that a negative experience can be linked to a smell and become a trigger, we can use an equally powerful scent to bring us back to the present moment, but that's not all. Our sense of smell is a powerful tool that can help us relax, calm down, and can even help us get some much needed rest.

Long before Midwestern moms were slanging Doterra and Youngliving oils all over Facebook Marketplace, the Ancient Egyptians were experimenting with the therapeutic properties of plants, flowers, and herbs. Scholars maintain that aromatherapy has been around as far back as 3,500 years BC. (No this has nothing to do with Aliens or the Pyramids)

What exactly are essential oils?

Essential oils are the extracted essence of a plant. The essence can be extracted from a variety of parts. Whether it’s the flower, the bark, leaf, or even the peel of its fruit. What makes essential oils so remarkable is that they are 100% concentrated essence and nothing else. For example, in order to make one pound of French Lavender, the only ingredient that you would need is 200 pounds of French lavender flowers.

How do they work?

Aromatherapy activates tiny smell receptors inside of your nose known as Olfactory nerves, which in turn send signals to your brain. If the signals are sent to your limbic system, it causes a shift in your emotions. If the signals are sent to your hypothalamus, your brain can be prompted to release endorphins and even serotonin.

What do they do?

Essential oils are not Magical cures or new age elixirs. But they can help us in many ways.

We can use them for

- Grounding

- Stress

- Anxiety

- Depression

- Relaxation

- Sleep

- Nausea

- Headaches

- Migraines
